MAPPING CONNECTIONS,

NAVIGATING DIFFERENCES

MAPPING PLACES,

REAL AND IMAGINED

During this lesson, we looked at maps, both traditional and non-traditional. Students located their school and neighborhood on Google Maps, and we looked at artist maps such at Rirkrit Tiravanija's work, Mapping the Land of  Feeling. Students were invited to map a real place that was special to them, a fantastical place from their imagination, or a combination of the two.

Students all worked on one large piece of paper, mapping out their places side-by-side behind the secrecy of pizza box walls. After they were all finished, there was a grand reveal and gallery walk where students could examine the work of their classmates. After the individual maps were completed, students collaborated with their neighbors to map out creative connections and modes of transportation between very different places.

THROUGH THIS PROCESS, STUDENTS EXPLORE CONCEPTS OF PLACE, SELF,AND COMMUNITY AND THE CONNECTIONS AND DIFFERENCES AMONG THEM.
