EMBODY

This unit focuses on the body as a site for art making. We will be considering a variety of approaches to the body in contemporary art and discussing artists who are making work that addresses the body. In this exploratory unit, we will consider the body as theme, subject, vehicle and tool in the art-making process and begin to tap into the inexhaustible possibilities that surround this topic. This will include approaches such as wearable sculpture, performance-based work, and a lot of material exploration.

A[DRESSING] THE BODY

The body as a vehicle for artmaking.

NICK CAVE

"Nick Cave is an artist, educator and foremost a messenger, working between the visual and performing arts through a wide range of mediums including sculpture, installation, video, sound and performance. He says of himself, "I have found my middle and now am working toward what I am leaving behind." Cave is well known for his Soundsuits, sculptural forms based on the scale of his body. Soundsuits camouflage the body, masking and creating a second skin that conceals race, gender, and class, forcing the viewer to look without judgment."

“Full body suits contracted of materials that rattle with movement…like a coat of armor, they embellish the body while protecting the wearer from outside culture.” —Nick Cave

In this interview, Nick Cave talks about his sound suits in more depth, particularly the importance of the materials he uses. He provides examples of content through material choice and the importance of found objects and materials in his work.

AD[DRESS]

The body as a vehicle for sculpture.

PER[FORM]

The body as a tool for artmaking.

Janine Antoni, Gnaw, 1992.   600 lbs of chocolate and 600 lbs of lard, gnawed by the artist. Each cube:  24 x 24 x 24"

"With "Gnaw" I was thinking about traditional sculpture, about carving. I was also interested in figurative sculpture. I put those two ideas together and decided that rather than describing the body, I would use the body, my body, as a tool for making art."   –Janine Antoni
