CHANCE

An Introduction to Surrealism

Students explored the role of chance and randomness in artmaking while learning about surrealist artists. Just like the surrealist artists of the early twentieth century, they experimented with surrealist techniques to unlock the power of imagination.

EXQUISITE CORPSE

Students tried the surrealist practice of "exquisite corpse," a collaborative drawing game where participants add to a sequential artwork without knowing the contributions of other artists.

EXQUISITE CORPSE BOOKS

First and second grade students created their own creatures, and then assembled them into a collaborative flip book. Students added color to their own books, making them their own.

BEAUTIFUL BLOBS

Students explore randomness in artmaking by transforming watercolor shapes through drawing.
