SATURDAY ART SCHOOL

EMBODY is a unit focused on the body as a site for art making. High school students considered a variety of approaches to the body in contemporary art and discussed artists who are making work that addresses the body. In this exploratory unit, we considered the body as theme, subject, vehicle and tool in the art-making process and begin to tap into the inexhaustible possibilities that surround this topic. This included approaches such as wearable sculpture and performance-based work.

CONCEPT MAPPING

Students begin developing their concepts by mapping out

ideas, related content, and thumbnail sketches.

PHOTOGRAPHIC SKETCHES

Students create "photographic sketches" based on thier concepts. This includes using available materials to get a feel for how their sketches translate to forms in space that relate to the body.

PER[FORM]

Students engage in performance-based activities to explore how

the body and movement can be used to create art.

AD[DRESS]

Students use the body as a vehicle for art by creating wearable sculpture.

ABSTR[ACTION]

Students see their work in action at the Saturday Art School exibition in Zoller Gallery at Penn State. Students' families and friends came to support the artists and celebrate their work.
