STUDENT TEACHING

PittsburghPUBLIC

Throughout my time at Brashear High School, which is part of the Pittsburgh Public School District, I helped to teach classes with students in grades 9-12, including Introduction to Art, Ceramics 2, Ceramics 3/4, and AP 3D Studio.

Ceramic Tile Triptychs

PITTSBURGH IN RELIEFS

Intermediate ceramics students create ceramic triptych based on architecture that they encounter in their daily lives by carving a series of earthenware three tiles.

ART HISTORY

Students learn about the history behind triptychs and their significance in European traditions, discussing Heironymus Bosch's "Garden of Earthly Delights" as a prominent example.  They then discussed how triptychs can be applied in a contemporary context, and how this process translates to ceramic relief carving.

NONREPRESENTATIONAL

SCULPTURE

Build Like an Animal

Students learn about animal homes, building methods and behaviors as a point of departure for creating nonrepresentational ceramic sculpture.

This unit was based on a project that Shannon Goff for a course at Penn State; I adapted it in order to give the advanced ceramics students and the AP students exposure to a college-level prompt.

Drawing From

THE NATURAL WORLD

Students learn about animal-built structures like termite mounds, birds nests, ant colony tunnels, bee hives, and coral reefs. They then use these structures and ways of building as points of departure for formal and process-based inspiration.
